Paint Info

Visual art can be a beautiful outlet for human creativity. I've used it for years to express myself, comment on social/environmental issues and make my living. It was only after studying environmental science in university that I came to a disturbing realization,  the art materials I was using were environmental hazards. Paint is toxic and everywhere, coating our cars, homes, offices, canvas and just about every modern artefact. No matter how deep we dig our landfills paint re-enters our environment, eventually.

After years of research and experimentation I have finally developed a way of making my paintings eco-friendly. Please visit my website www.stefanthompson.com and learn how you too can make nontoxic art. If you have ever painted a canvas or a wall in your house or plan to...you shoud hear this.

i was looking for thi sentry of yours, because i remember i read it a couple of years ago, and it stuck in my head. I also have interest in beeing enviromentally just/fair (?) in everything i do, mainly i try to avoid buying new stuff and use things people would throw away. The bad habits are put aside as I grow. By the time i read this, i had already a lot of paint (acrilycs, oil, watercolor, latex, varnishes, etc), I still have them. Since i already have them i guess i have to use them, (?) . (That is topic i reflect constantly, the limits of being "eco-fair" and stop creating/producing/existing)-

I recently changed college, and they have this excersice where students HAVE to paint lots of paper with latex to make collages, and everybody (like 200 students every year the whole year) washes and puts all the residues down the drain. I think it is unacceptable that teachers think that is normal and that they teach to paint but they don't teach what to do after.
I was wondering if you knew a way to minimize the damage of this (i dont think they'll stop using latex paint- and for me too, since i had to buy a lot of, and also because people paint their houses a LOT)?
What i have done the last time i used it, is to wash the brushes in a bucket and the leave the bucket in the sun so the water evaporates and i can throw the solid latex paint to the garbage? The water is still evaporating, i hope it works, or does the medium evaporate to and contaminates the air?
